Auli is known place for ski­ing and is situ­ated 16 kms away from Joshi­math in Chamoli dis­trict of Uttarakhand. It is basic­ally “Bugyal” in local lan­guage which means mead­ows or graz­ing fields. Dur­ing viol­ence in Kash­mir, Auli was developed as a main cen­ter of ski­ing and winter games.

Aulicon­tains a slope of 3 kms from the height of 3049 meters to 2519 meters and experts con­sider it as one of the best ski­ing slopes in the world. Alpine Tour­ism Pro­mo­tion Coun­cil has equated the Auli slopes as the second largest in Asia and one of the best slopes in the world. The snow beat­ers are also avail­able here to keep the snow soft and ski­able. The splen­did view of snow­capped great Him­alayan Moun­tains also fills thrill among nature lov­ers and ski­ers. Auli boasts of the longest rope­way cable car in Asia cov­er­ing 4 kms dis­tance and is per­fect for reach­ing the Auli’s higher slopes while feed­ing the eyes with beau­ti­ful nature near Gon­dola. One can go in this cable car to Auli from Joshi­math which costs around Rs.400/- for return ticket fare and takes around 20 minutes. This rope­way helps tour­ists to explore the region with unpar­alleled and dis­tinct­ive exper­i­ence. After reach­ing Auli, One can go to Auli’s Clifftop Club via 800 meters long chair-​lift and ski­ers can go from here to ski­ing point through another ski-​lift. Both lifts con­nects to the upper and lower slopes avail­able for ski­ing. The chair-​lift has inter­na­tional stand­ard remote con­trolled hydolic and pneu­matic sys­tem which makes the trav­el­ler a safe feel­ing while trav­el­ling in it. One can go to Auli also via road and there are good num­bers of buses and taxis avail­able for Auli from Joshi­math. The ski­ing sea­son is from Decem­ber to March and if you want to learn the ski­ing then you can con­tact Gar­hwal Man­dal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) for 7 days or 15 days ski­ing course. There are good num­bers of ski­ing train­ers are avail­able in Joshi­math who lead trainee ski­ing groups on daily basis. There are four type of ski­ing slopes are avail­able in Auli and one can try it accord­ing to the level of exper­i­ence in ski­ing. These slopes are:

1-​White – This slope is 900 meters long and is called trek no-​10.
2-​Blue – This slope is 800 meters long and is called trek no-​8.
3-​Red – It is also called temple trek and is 400 meters long and best for ski begin­ners.
4-​Composite – This slope is 3.1 kms long and used by the exper­i­enced ski­ers with many challenges.

There are two good places to stay in Auli. The one is from GMVN and other is Clifftop Club. The Clifftop Club is situ­ated at the height of 10000 feet on 8th pole of the cable car rope­way and is second highest resort in the world and is only the ski­ing resort in the world at such height. It provides all kind of facil­it­ies includ­ing 25 lux­ury stu­dios, 16 lux­ury suites, 2 fam­ily suites and fur­nished with sofa-​cum-​bed, par­tial kit­chenette, microwave oven, refri­ger­ator, tele­vi­sion with satel­lite con­nec­tion, tele­phone and oil-​heat radi­at­ors. It also con­tains multi cuisine res­taur­ant named Al fresco, Ske­doo, a cof­fee shop and snacks bar and open air barbe­que and con­sidered heaven for ski­ers. This club also provides pick-​up and drop facil­it­ies from Joshi­math for the travellers.
